Note: R1234yf is an ASHRAE A2L class mildly flammable gas. Flammability limits are 6.2%–12.3% (vol in air); burning velocity is very low and ignition energy is relatively high. Under most practical use conditions it is difficult to ignite, but it must still be managed as a flammable gas. GWP < 1 (~0.3); it is a fourth-generation HFO ultra-low-GWP refrigerant.

Inhalation:
Skin contact (frostbite):
Eye contact:
Ingestion:
Not applicable. This substance is a gas at ambient temperature; ingestion exposure is not expected.
Suitable extinguishing media: Use extinguishing agent appropriate for surrounding fire. Dry chemical, carbon dioxide, water fog, and foam are acceptable.
Unsuitable extinguishing media: Direct strong water jet onto leaking liquefied gas (accelerates evaporation and dispersion).
Hydrogen fluoride (HF), carbon monoxide (CO), carbonyl fluoride (COF₂), and other fluorinated compounds.
See Section 8 (Exposure controls/personal protection) and Section 13 (Disposal considerations).
For industrial use only. Primarily used in automotive air conditioning systems (as R134a replacement) and residential/commercial air conditioning, chillers, etc. Personnel must be professionally trained. Do not use for direct food contact, medical inhalation, or other unapproved applications. Systems using R1234yf must account for its mild flammability and incorporate appropriate explosion-proof and leak detection measures.

Chemically stable under normal temperature and pressure conditions; not readily reactive. However, it has a flammable range in air (6.2%–12.3%) and can burn with an ignition source.
Stable under normal conditions of temperature and pressure. Within the flammable concentration range, it can burn with an ignition source (A2L mildly flammable; very low burning velocity). Contains a carbon-carbon double bond but does not readily polymerize at ambient temperature.
High temperature, open flame, ignition sources (electric sparks, static electricity), direct heat sources, cylinder overpressure
Reactive metals (sodium, potassium, calcium, aluminum powder, magnesium powder, etc.), strong oxidizing agents, halogens
Hydrogen fluoride (HF), carbon monoxide (CO), carbonyl fluoride (COF₂), and other fluorinated compounds
Will not occur under normal storage and use conditions.
Acute toxicity:
| Rat inhalation LC50 (4 hr) | >500,000 ppm (highest concentration tested; low toxicity) |

| Mouse inhalation LC50 (4 hr) | >500,000 ppm |
| Rabbit dermal LD50 | Not available (gaseous substance) |
Liquid contact can cause frostbite (physical injury). GHS classification: mild skin irritation (Category 2B, H316). Not a chemical corrosive.
Liquid contact can cause severe frostbite and corneal damage. GHS classification: Serious eye damage/eye irritation Category 2B (H320), causes eye irritation.
No sensitization reported. Available animal test data and human epidemiology data show no sensitization effect.
In vitro and in vivo tests (Ames test, chromosome aberration test, mouse micronucleus test, etc.) show no mutagenic effect.
Insufficient evidence for carcinogenicity.
Animal studies show subchronic inhalation NOAEL of 50,000 ppm, with no significant reproductive or developmental toxicity. No human reproductive toxicity data available.
Subchronic inhalation studies (28-day and 90-day) show no significant target organ toxicity below NOAEL 50,000 ppm. Repeated low-concentration exposure shows no clear organ damage.
Not expected to cause aspiration pneumonia in gaseous form. However, high-concentration inhalation can cause CNS depression and cardiac sensitization. If combustion occurs, inhalation of thermal decomposition products (HF) can cause severe respiratory burns and pulmonary edema.

| Bacterial toxicity | Not available |
log P = 2.04. Relatively low bioaccumulation potential (below the bioconcentration threshold of log P = 4.5).
Highly volatile in gaseous form. Low water solubility. High mobility. Volatilizes readily to atmosphere and degrades rapidly when released to soil.
Does not meet PBT (persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic) / vPvB (very persistent and very bioaccumulative) criteria. Short atmospheric lifetime; not a persistent substance.
